I remember the last time I was afraid to ask.
My hand stayed on the table, heavy and useless.
The words sat in my throat like a stone.
I thought everyone would laugh if I spoke.
But not asking is its own kind of loss.
The answer stays hidden, and I stay small.
My father never asked for help with his books.
He read alone in the living room, frowning.
I think he was afraid too, of seeming weak.
Tonight, I will ask one small question.
It does not have to be perfect.

It just has to leave my mouth.
